但接下来的情节发展却由不得我们多想，故事立即就以一个悲哀的结尾结束了。爱斯梅拉达被绞死;主教代理则被愤怒的卡齐莫多推下了塔楼，摔的是血肉模糊;而卡齐莫多带着爱斯梅拉达的尸体永远长眠于一个死人窟里。书的结尾写了这么一段话，令刚读此书的我立即呆住了。后来人到死人窟里寻找他人尸体的时候，引出了故事的最终结局：爱斯梅拉达与卡齐莫多的尸体变成了两具白骨，而这白骨也在那群人的不小心触碰中变成了尘埃。这是本书的最后一句话，故事的终结是一个完完整整的人的自然的终结，而作为雨果练笔的巴黎圣母院故事到此结束。显然，雨果到最后没有了对作为练笔之书的激情，只是给了故事一个很“自然”的结局。
